Jaipur, Apr 3 : The opposition BJP today accused the Congress Government of not being serious about farmers' welfare, saying the Rs 6.5 crore relief package for crop loss in hailstorm was "inadequate" Reacting to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's statement yesterday at a poll rally that he wanted to help farmers, but for the model code of conduct, BJP Whip Rajendra Rathore said the package was "insufficient" and mere a "formality" as no money has been released.
Gehlot had said he wanted to help farmers but could not do anything as his hands were tied due to model code of conduct for Lok Sabha polls.
Rathore said hailstorm during January 16-18 had damaged 15 to 80 per cent of Rabi crops on 20,000 hectare in 250 villages and the government declared relief package on January 20.
The saffron leader alleged that though crops were destroyed in 15 districts on February 10 and 11 also, the administration did not release any relief.
Alleging that the government did not release the amount despite announcing it, he said it was a "joke" on the part of the government to announce the compensation and not issue it.
