Alappuzha, Apr 9 : Hitting back at the Congress for calling the third front a pipedream, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat on Wednesday said it is the UPA, which is fast becoming an "unreality" with its constituents deserting the alliance "day-by-day".
The UPA is "crumbling" with Congress' trusted allies like Lalu Prasad, Mulayam Singh and Sharad Pawar deserting the coalition, Karat said at an election meeting of LDF candidate K S Manoj at Cherthala near here.
The Congress' return to power would be "disastrous" for the common man, he claimed. Under the UPA rule, 25 lakh people had lost jobs, which would steadily go up if it was voted back to power, he said.
But for the intervention of the Left, the Congress would have destroyed the public banking sector in the country and, the fallout of the global recession would have been severe, he claimed.
The UPA Government had "failed utterly" in tackling price rise. While the official statistics claimed that inflation had dipped, the price of basic commodities like foodgrains were going up.
