Ludhiana, Apr 28: Bahujan Samaj Party supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today sought to assure the Sikhs that they would be given justice and those responsible for the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 would be brought to book.
''If we are voted to power at the Centre, stringent action will be taken against those responsible for the 1984 riots'', she said while addressing an impressive election rally at the grain market on NH=I here.
In an apparent attempt to woo the Sikh voters, Ms Mayawati said that her party had always favoured punishing those who were responsible for the riots. She decried the clean chit given by the CBI to Jagdish Tytler despite his indictment by the Nanawati Commission.
''The Congress has always used the CBI like a puppet to settle scores'' she alleged at her first poll rally in the border state.
''The Congress has been in the habit of handing out CBI threat to political opponents'', she said while reminding the people that she too had been hounded by the country's premier investigating agency.
