New Delhi, Apr 2 : The Congress nominated Jayantrao Awale, working president of party's Maharashtra unit, its candidate from the Latur Parliamentary constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.Awale, who hails from Ichalkaranji, is seen as a compromise candidate as senior leaders Vilasrao Deshmukh and Shivraj Patil were pitching for different persons for a Lok Sabha ticket from the constituency.
Latur had become a seat reserved for the Schedule Castes in the recent delimitation exercise.
Rupatai Nilangekar of the BJP had humbled Patil in the previous elections by a margin of over 30,000 votes.
Congress has fielded five-time MP Damodar Barku Shingada from Palghar, which is a seat reserved for Schedule Tribes.
Palghar is a new seat created in Maharashtra after the delimitation exercise. Shingada earlier represented Dahanu Parliamentary constituency which has now ceased to exist.
