Lucknow, May 2 : The Congress party’s Pilibhit candidate V.M. Singh, who is contesting against his nephew and Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Varun Gandhi, has been charged for violating the model code of conduct, an official said Saturday.
“He (Singh) has defied the poll code by not providing details of expenditure incurred on his election campaign, following which the Pilibhit district administration issued a notice against him,” chief treasury officer Bhagwan Das told IANS on telephone.
Singh, who has emerged as the richest Lok Sabha candidate so far, was supposed to furnish details of his electioneering expenses Friday. Pilibhit is about 250 km from here. Singh has to reply to the notice, issued late Friday, by Saturday evening. “If he does not do so, a case would be registered against him,” said Das.
Singh, 50, declared assets worth Rs.631 crore (Rs.6.31 billion).
