Sajjan Kumar has last laugh, his brother gets ticket

Labels:
New Delhi, Apr 17 : Jat strongman Sajjan Kumar had the last laugh on Friday with the Congress nominating his brother Ramesh Kumar for South Delhi seat from where the former's candidature was withdrawn in the wake of a fresh flare-up in protests by Sikhs against CBI's clean chit to Jagdish Tytler in connection with 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Though Mr. Sajjan Kumar has been maintaining a studied silence since he was dropped along with Northeast Delhi candidate Mr. Tytler from the Lok Sabha race, he is understood to have conveyed to the party leadership that he can't be written off easily.

Mr. Sajjan Kumar, aware that he couldn't fight for his own candidature for the seat in view of the party sentiments towards Sikh protests, he had been canvassing for his son Jagparvesh and brother Ramesh Kumar, sources said.

Mr. Ramesh Kumar was elected to represent the Shahbad Daulatpur seat in Northwest Delhi in the Delhi assembly in 1998. In the subsequent election in 2003, however, he lost.He was refused a party ticket to contest the assembly elections last year.

However, by assuring ticket to his brother, he has dashed the hopes of his arch rival in DPCC Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit who was pushing for her loyalist Speaker Yoganand Shastri for the nomination, the sources addded.
