Modi tones down rhetoric but Congress rivals still in focus

Labels:
UCHHAL: Making a departure from his usual fiery style, Chief Minister Narendra Modi adopted a calm and composed manner to flay his Congress rivals at the public meeting here on Wednesday.

He used madam, ben and other respectable words for Congress president Sonia Gandhi and prime minister Manmohan Singh at the meeting attended by around 10,000 migrants of Uchhal taluka where the former had gone to campaign for BJP's Bardoli candidate Ritesh Vasava.

There were no mentions of "budhiya", "gudiya" and "weak prime minister" comments and whenever he had to refer to Congress president or prime minister, he was respectful towards them.

"BJP stands for development unlike Congress which wants power," said Modi.

He claimed that his government has made science education accessible to tribals and also providing Rs 2 crore every year to each taluka for development.

The chief minister said of the 60 years since Independence, the country was ruled by Congress for over 50 years and that too by descendants of one family.

He alleged that though Gujarat had a chief minister from tribal community during Congress regime, the tribals remained neglected.

Targeting Congress for its anti-poor policies, the chief minister said "Congress has announced in its manifesto to provide wheat to the poor at Rs 3 per kg. When BJP announced to offer wheat at Rs 2 per kg, Congress had alleged that we have tried to hijack its campaign issue. I am giving wheat to the poor at Rs 2 per kg in Gujarat and a friend in Congress told me that his party is planning to purchase wheat from Gujarat to sell it at Rs 3 to people in other states."

He further alleged that Congress had filed a case against him in court when he started distribution of land to the tribals.
