Jaffer Sharief launches campaign sans the frills

Jaffer Sharief, Bangalore North candidate of Congress, meets Parvatamma Rajkumar, during his election campaign, in Bangalore on Wednesday.

BANGALORE, Apr 9 : On the dusty, rugged stretches of Hesaraghatta, Dasarahalli and Jalahalli under Bangalore North constituency, on Wednesday, year 2004 was a bygone affair.

Candidate Jaffer Sharief ’s campaign team rolled through singing paeans of one S M Krishna and the achievements of a Congress government had under him. Bisi oota and Vikas Soudha being the prominent among them.

Glaring colours and noise and banners and buntings held all the regular charm of an election-time, very unlike the bus-rides and morning walks that have been marking the campaign of hi-profile candidates within the city.

Ongoing work on the Yeshwanthpur Circle flyover and the tall uncapped piers of Metro Rail running all the way through Peenya and Jalahalli spoke that development is on its way. Heaps of the construction debris and haphazardly parked sand and brick-laden lorries that were eating into the narrow road stretches are hopefully temporary inconveniences, then.

Sharief had started out early in the day from K R Puram. On his way to another meeting at Yeshwanthpur late afternoon, he took a detour and called on the family of Kannada cine idol late Rajkumar in Sadashivanagar.

Speaking to The New Indian Express Sharief said that in Bangalore North “there is no fight at all”.

The BJP has already exposed its “bankruptcy of candidates” by fielding long-time Congressman D B Chandregowda, he said.

He also said, “S M Krishna has given me his schedule. He will address five meetings in the constituency on April 13.” How strange, that in 2004 LS election, the then chief minister S M Krishna and candidate Jaffer Sharief were able to manage a meeting point only in the closing hours of the last day of campaigning - at Hoskote to be specific, and supercop H T Sangliana contesting then on a BJP ticket had gone on to trounce Sharief.
