New Delhi, Apr 10 : With the Congress withdrawing Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler from the election race, the names of their probable replacements have started doing the rounds.
Kumar was given a ticket from the South Delhi constituency that has been carved out of Outer Delhi and is now primarily a rural belt with a sizeable Jat and Gurjjar population. On the other hand, Tytler was to contest from the Northeast seat after he lost his Sadar seat to delimitation.
Northeast has been carved out of sitting MP Sandeep Dikshit’s East Delhi constituency and comprises mainly unauthorised colonies.
While Kumar is extensively lobbying to replace himself with his son Jagparvesh Chaudhary and retain the 80,000-strong Jat vote, sources said the party high command was not likely to select Chaudhary, with Kumar’s candidature stirring up a storm over the last two days.
The next in-line is Mehrauli Jat MLA and Delhi Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri. Sources claim the rural constituency has a polarised vote of Gurjjars and Jats and it is imperative to put up a Jat candidate against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, a Gurjjar MLA from Tughlaqabad. The Congress, however, holds a majority of Assembly seats in the constituency.
While DPCC general secretary Naresh Kumar too is eyeing the vacant seat, another Jat candidate on the radar is Haryana Forest and Tourism Minister Kiran Chaudhary’s daughter Shruti, who was so far looking at the Bhiwani-Mahendergarh seat.
The 20-something aspirant had earlier tried for an Assembly ticket from Delhi Cantonment. Sources said the Congress might accommodate her in West Delhi as it was seriously contemplating shifting Delhi MLA Mahabal Mishra from West Delhi to Northeast to cash in on the Poorvanchali vote.
