BANGALORE: A day after the BJP removed controversial leader Varun Gandhi from its panel of star campaigners, the Congress expressed surprise as to why the saffron party had not withdrawn his candidature from Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency.
Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan told reporters that she was surprised why Varun Gandhi’s candidature was neither withdrawn nor his statements condemned.
Terming the handling of the incident by BJP as “unfortunate and unconstitutional” she said it reflected the BJP’s politics of hate and divisiveness.
Asked whether the Congress sought action against Gandhi, she said that it was for the Election Commission to initiate action against him. She lashed out at the BJP for exploiting the terror issue for electoral gains.
On the RJD-LJP combine’s decision to contest 39 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, leaving just three for the Congress, she said they (Congress) were not responsible for the current situation. On the party’s decision to contest 26 seats in Bihar, the Congress leader said that one cannot hold the party responsible for any rift as the RJD-LJP combine was responsible for the present confusion by taking an unilateral decision.
