New Delhi, March 12 : Controversial member of Parliament M K Subba, whose Indian citizenship has been mired in controversy, has renominated by Congress ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Tezpur in Assam where the party also gave a ticket to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi&aposs brother.
Subba&aposs citizenship has kicked off a row and CBI had told the Supreme Court last year that the birth certificate and other details submitted by Subba are fake.
The CBI, in its report to the apex court, had said details and the birth-related information furnished by Subba to EC was"not genuie and appear to be forged". The Supreme Court had sought a response from Subba but the matter is still pending.
A senior Congress leader, however, said"winnability"was the only criteria for giving party tickets.
He said Subba, a three-time MP, was a"winning candidate"and the charges against him are yet to be proved beyond doubt.
In Assam, the party did not give its ticket to sitting MP Kirip Cheliha from Gauhati and nominated Robin Bordoloi, MLA and son of former Chief Minister Gopinath Bordloi.
Party sources said Cheliha was not keen to contest the seat again and had requested for a shift to some other constituency, which was not accepted by the party leadership. In the last elections, he had defeated noted singer Bhupen Hazarika of BJP.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi&aposs brother Dip Gogoi has been given the ticket to contest from Kaliabor constituency.
