Guwahati, March 20 : The BJP today hinted that internal security in Assam would be its main poll plank in the state. 

Accusing the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government of being soft against terror, Harendra Pratap, one of the BJP’s elections in-charge for Assam, today said the escape of the alleged druglord Pakhi Mian from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital and Dispur’s failure to arrest a single accused in the serial blasts last year would be the major issues against the Congress.

The Congress would now have to answer to the people how a dreaded criminal like Mian escaped and why there was no inquiry into the incident, Pratap said.

Addressing a news conference here today, the BJP leader said the state government had completely failed to protect the lives and property of the people of Assam.

Pratap said Gogoi’s statement on protection of the interests of the minority community was appeasement of a particular community. The BJP would draw the attention of the Election Commission to it, he said.

The BJP will move the poll panel charging Gogoi with violating the model code of conduct by taking donations from a tea company for the Congress’s election funds.

“Gogoi has misused his position by collecting donations,” Pratap said.

The BJP will also request the poll panel to deploy adequate number of observers to prevent misuse of government machinery by the ruling Congress as it allegedly did in the last panchayat elections in Hailakandi and Karimganj.

The BJP and the AGP have decided to form a joint co-ordination committee for the alliance’s election management.
