Assam CM misleading on border fence: AASU

GUWAHATI, Dec 19 : All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today said that the statement made by the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on the floor of the Parliament yesterday on sealing Indo-border sealing, presence of HUJI and implementation of the Assam Accord exposed the lie of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and proved the veracity of the allegations made by the people of the State on the issues. AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai, general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi and advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya told this newspaper that

despite assurances made by the Central Government in the Assam Accord and the present Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at the May 5, 2005 tripartite meeting on Assam Accord implementation, the Indo-Banlga border remained porus.

The Prime Minister set a deadline for sealing the Indo-Bangla border by December 31, 2006. But that affirmation of the Prime Minister remained unfulfilled so far, said the AASU office-bearers.

The present Home Minister Chidambaram is also silent as to when the sealing of the international border of the country with Bangladesh will be completed. Moreover, he also failed to spell out as to when the implementation of the Assam Accord will be completed, though his Ministry is the nodal Ministry for implementing the Accord, said the AASU office-bearers.

The Central Government should evolve a mechanism to drive out all HUJI and the like fundamentalist elements along with the illegal migrants from the State. But the Home Minister is blissfully silent on the issue.

Besides, the statement of the Home Minister on mounting pressure on Bangladesh on the issue of jehadi bases on its soil has also failed to impress the people of the State. For the Minister has not spelt out any action into this regard, said the AASU office-bearers.
