ITANAGAR: The BJP in Arunachal Pradesh has accused the ruling Congress government of adopting unfair means to add or remove the names of voters from the electoral rolls for the ensuing panchayat and municipal elections slated for May 16 next.
The party in a statement on Thursday said that the government in power was indulging in various unjust means to compel the capital administration to add or remove names of voters. This, they said, would invite serious law and order problem in the state capital.
"Even after announcement of the panchayat election, the final compilation of electoral rolls is still on. Voters are being transferred to municipal wards under which their residences do not fall. This is a conspiracy and they are depriving the families of their democratic rights," the party said and threatened to launch a democratic movement if the anomalies were not checked immediately.
"Thousands of voters are being victimized with the present arrangement of electoral rolls. It needs to be sorted out and addressed in a free and fair manner," the statement said.
The party urged upon the Itanagar Municipality Electoral Registration authorities to stop the ongoing selective transfer of mass voters from one municipality ward to another simply based on forged electricity bills. This was gross violation of democratic norms and practices, the party added.
State BJP president Tai Tagak urged the state election commission to use face recognition and other software to detect duplicity of voters while finalization of electoral rolls.
