The BJP on Monday asked the Election Commission to delete the names of illegal Bangladeshi migrants from Assam’s electoral list before the Assembly elections later this year.

“Both the state and the Centre have miserably failed to check illegal migration of Bangladeshis due to... soft policy on political consideration. Delete the illegal Bangladeshi names from the voters’ list of Assam; prepare a correct voters’ list before the election; and give citizenship status to displaced Hindus from Bangladesh living in Assam,” the BJP demanded in a memorandum.

The delegation included Varun Gandhi, who heads the party’s election panel in the state. The demand come as a fresh attempt by the party to revive its anti-Bangladeshi plank with an eye on the polls.
