New Delhi, Apr 2 : When it comes to participation in the election, women are at par with men as the data regarding the 2004 elections shows that for every 10 male voters eight women exercised their franchise.
According to the figures of the Election Commission, there were approximately 38.93 crore voters who used their voting rights in the 2004 general elections which included 17.27 crore women and 21.66 male voters.
In some states and union territories, women voters had outnumbered their counterparts. In Kerala, the number of women voters were about 86 thousand more than that of males. About 74.8 lakh males voted as compared to 75.6 lakh women voters.
Similarly, turn-out of women voters in the one-seat constituency of Lakshawdeep was also higher in the polls. A total of 16,122 women voted for their representatives as against 15,698 male voters.
In Meghalaya too, women voters outnumbered their male counterparts as about 3.77 lakh females cast their votes as compared to 3.02 lakh male voters.
A significant number of female voters also cast their votes in Andhra Pradesh in the last Lok Sabha elections. As compared to about 1.83 crore male, 1.73 crore females used their right to vote.
