UPA gets Karat cosh in Tripura

AGARTALA, Apr 7 : CPM general secretary Prakash Karat launched a scathing attack on the UPA government here on Sunday accusing it of financial irregularities during the military deal with Israel as well as in the telecom scam.

Addressing the Left Front's central rally in Agartala, Karat alleged that the Manmohan Singh government entered into the USA- Israel axis and finalized the Rs 10,000-crore deal with Israel just two days before the elections were declared.

"Of this amount, six per cent which stands at Rs 600 crore was siphoned off as commission," Karat said. He added that they have demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

On the telecom scam, Karat said the government had lost a whopping Rs 1 lakh crore by distributing Spectrum rights among small companies.

"The UPA government's corrupt practices have been exposed to the nation. Last year, it had won the trust vote by purchasing MPs," he added.

Karat, while seeking to reassure that the Third Front would go ahead' in forming the next non-NDA and non-UPA government in the Centre, said the tradition of bipolar body politics of the country with BJP and Congress in the lead has ended.

"Now, the Third Front which is committed to provide an alternative and secular government is set to come to power", the CPM general secretary said. Nevertheless, Karat remained non-committal on his party's joining the government in case the Third Front comes to power.

"There are four Indians who were richest people of the world", pointed out Karat to prove his point that a nation's wealth was not properly distributed and capitalist forces were still eating up the resources only to breed a small section of wealthy people.

While justifying the Left Front's support to the UPA on common minimum programme and then withdrawal on nuclear agreement issue, the leader said had it not been CPM, India would have plunged into a deep financial crisis owing to the global recession.

"We had forced the government for implementing NREGA, forest right acts to allow land rights to forest dwelling tribals besides programmes for welfare of women".

"It was due to Left Front's timely intervention and staunch opposition that the country's economy was not as bad as other countries because of the global financial crisis," said the CPM general secretary.
