Rae Bareilly, Apr 25 : The victory of the Congress at the Parliamentary constituency of Rae Bareilly, the political bastion of the Nehru-Gandhi family, it seems, is a forgone conclusion.
Rae Bareilly, the traditional bastion of the Congress party, was for the very first time after Independence won by Jawaharlal Nehrus son-in-law Feroze Gandhi. The seat is presently being represented by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and lies adjacent to another partys stronghold constituency of Amethi, interestingly being held by her son and CWC member of the Congress Rahul Gandhi.
However, proximity is not just the only common-factor between them as the two constituencies also share a common poll agent Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. While not fighting the elections herself, Priyanka, had in the 2007 Uttar Pradesh state assembly elections, proved to be a powerful force in gaining large majorities for Congress in the area.
This Lok Sabha elections too, Priyanka has taken the charge of the poll agent for mother Sonia and brother Rahul at Rae Bareilly and Amethi respectively. However, as the polling at the Amethi Lok Sabha seat has already concluded under Phase-II polling on April 23, all eyes are now fixed at Rae Bareilly, another important seat in the electoral battle going to elections under Phase-III on April 30.
However, despite her relentless campaigning among the voters to ensure victory of the Congress with a high margin, the low voter turnout at Amethi has placed Priyanka in a worrisome situation.
Finding her dream hard to realise after just about 45 per cent of polling in Amethi, Priyanka recently said It, of course, gave me a sleepless night. Priyanka had expressed her sole aim was to see her brother win with a record margin and had even once said she wants to see Rahul win with a margin even bigger than her mother.
