Health checks in schools should be compulsory: Renuka Chowdhury

New Delhi, April 22 : After a Class 12 student died following an asthmatic attack in a school here, Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury Wednesday advocated compulsory health checks in schools.

“We must be cautious and periodical health checks should be made compulsory in all schools. We should give quality education and education with human face for saving our children,” said Chowdhury.

Aakriti Bhatia, a student of Modern School, Vasant Vihar, suffered an asthmatic attack in school Monday and died on the way to hospital.

She had complained of breathlessness to her teacher and had later called up and informed her mother as well. She was shifted to the school’s sports room and put on oxygen. As her condition deteriorated, she was rushed to Holy Angels hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Aakriti’s parents blame the school authorities for her death as they feel they delayed taking her to the hospital. Her father said he would file a police complaint against the school.

“We will file a police complaint against the school authorities for their negligence. Had Aakriti been rushed to hospital on time, she would have survived,” said Vipin Bhatia, Aakriti’s father.

The school principal Goldy Malhotra, however, refuted these allegations and said: “We don’t agree that there was negligence on our part. The school has always been taking care of the students and we have a nurse to attend to any medical emergency.”

Aakriti’s relatives and friends Wednesday held a peace meeting outside the school to mourn her death.
