CPI(M) fields only 2 women contestants in LS polls from Bengal

Labels:
Kolkata, Apr 9- Even though Left front major CPI(M) has been vociferously demanding one-third representation of women in Parliament, it has fielded only two members of the fairer sex for the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal.

Of the 42 seats in the state the LF is contesting, two women sitting MPs Jyotirmoyee Sikdar and Sushmita Bauri of the CPI(M) have been renominated in the Krishnagar and Bishnupur (SC) constituencies. This makes women’s representation from the Left Front at less than five per cent.
The number of women contestants from the Left Front, in fact, has gone down in comparison to the last two parliamentary elections. In 1999, there were three, while four contested the 2004 Lok Sabha election.

The Trinamool Congress which is contesting in 27 seats is in a better position having given tickets to five women candidates including party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

Its ally Congress which is contesting 14 seats has three women on its poll list, while BJP, contesting all the 42 seats, has an equal number of women nominees.
