Congress mulls stable govt with UDP

Shillong, April 24 : Former chief minister S.C. Marak, who has the blessings of the state Congress to negotiate with the United Democratic Party to form a stable government in Meghalaya, has ruled out any truck with the Nationalist Congress Party.
He told The Telegraph that he would not explore the possibility of a Congress-NCP government, as NCP leader P.A. Sangma was not keen on such an alliance.
The decision to negotiate with the UDP was taken after Marak met party spokesman R.C. Laloo yesterday.
Marak said he would meet J.D. Rymbai, the UDP’s new legislature party chief, to explore the possibilities of a Congress-UDP government. “I will ask him for suggestions on a possible tie-up between the Congress and the UDP.”
According to Marak, Rymbai is still his friend though he left the Congress last year.
Marak said his party was keen to have a Congress-UDP government in the state but would not like to see the NCP ally with the UDP or other regional parties.
He feels that Sangma’s entry into state politics has brought bad tidings for Meghalaya, triggering the current political crisis and the imposition of President’s rule.
Marak, a veteran of 30 years in state politics, said Sangma had returned to state politics twice and on both occasions President’s rule had been imposed.
It was imposed from October 11, 1991 to February 5, 1992 because of political instability after Sangma was chief minister from February 6, 1988, to March 25, 1990.
After the imposition of President’s rule, Sangma went to Delhi as Tura MP.
President’s rule was imposed yet again from March 19 this year after the formation of the NCP-UDP government under the guidance of Sangma, Marak added.
