BANGALORE: Big names like Jaffer Sharief, D B Chandre Gowda, H T Sangliana, and Captain Gopinath in Bangalore, A Shantha in Bellary and Margaret Alva in Uttara Kannada were among the 73 candidates who filed their nominations, on Friday across the 17 constituencies, which will go for the polls on April 23.
Saturday is the last date for filing nominations for the first phase and Congress’ Krishna Byregowda is expected to file his nomination for the prestigious Bangalore South seat Saturday.
A Congressman till Wednesday and a BJP-man since Thursday, D B Chandre Gowda and veteran Congressman Jaffer Sharief came a few feet of each other at the Bangalore Urban district deputy commissioner’s office when they arrived to file their nominations for Bangalore North constituency; neither made any attempt to acknowledge the other, but their bytes to the media gave ample indication of the sour relations.
“The Congress had given everything to Chandre Gowda. There was no need for him to quit the party,” Jaffer Sharif said and opined that Chandre Gowda should have stayed back and worked for the party and the time for giving wings to his personal ambitions would have presented itself.
Quoting social reformer Shishunala Sharief, Chandre Gowda said that the Congress was like a house with a “leaking roof ” and there was no one to repair it. The contest at Bangalore North is not between candidates, but one between BJP and the Congress, he said. Chandre Gowda was accompanied by minister Katta Subramanya Naidu among others.
Sharief also brushed aside queries on his failed attempts to get ticket for Bangalore Central. He is a Bangalore North, candidate “wholeheartedly”, he said and also poohpoohed queries on youth and age.
“We are young enough to take care of the nation,” said Sharief who is 76.

Releasing a ‘Vision Statement’ he claimed that people who are not swayed by money and caste considerations were his supporters. Gopinath was accompanied by his wife and daughters; his friends from the industry were conspicuous by their absence though.
In Bangalore Central former supercop H T Sangliana who has hopped from BJP to Congress, said his fight was against corruption. Including H T Sangliana, 15 persons filed their nominations for Bangalore Central.
Round two Fourteen persons filed their nominations on Friday across the 11 constituencies which will go for polls in the second phase on April 30. Among them were BJP’s C H Vijayshankar (Mysore) and Parla Joshi (Dharwad) The others were independents.
