Sushma Swaraj to contest polls from Vidisha

Labels:
BHOPAL, Mar 9 : Vidisha Lok Sabha seat which has a distinction of sending outsiders including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the Lok Sabha is once again into limelight with the BJP deciding to field its general secretary Sushma Swaraj from here.

In the 1967 elections, a non-local candidate Pandit Shiv Sharma was elected from the seat soon after its creation in the same year. Later, Ramnath Goenka was elected from the seat in the year 1971, who was also an outsider.

However, Vidisha got its first local MP when Raghavji, who at present is a finance minister in the Madhya Pradesh Government, was elected in the 1977 elections.

In 1980 and 1984 Indira wave ensured the victory of Congress and local candidate Pratap Bhanu Sharma, a Scindia loyalist, from Vidisha. Since 1989, Vidisha remained a stronghold of BJP as the party won all the polls and by-polls from here.

Raghavji won the polls from here in 1989 and later former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee emerged victorious in the 1991 general elections
