Show cause notice to BJP state president for violating code

Mangaldoi (Assam), Mar 22:  Assam unit BJP President Ramen Deka, who is also the party candidate for the Mangaldoi parliamentary constituency, has been served with a show cause notice by the Returning Officer for violating the model code of conduct.

"Deka had violated the code of conduct by using 40 vehicles in his convoy when the permissible number is only four. A notice has been served in this regard to him answerable within 24 hours from the time of receipt," Returning Officer Dhruba Hazarika told PTI here today.

A candidate is allowed to travel in a convoy of four vehicles, including security, and more vehicles can follow the main convoy at a distance of 200 metres but this was not maintained by the BJP candidate, Hazarika said.

Moreover, a permission was required to be taken from the district election authorities regarding the number of vehicles to be used by the candidate and this permission certificate must be displayed on the first vehicle of the convoy.

"No permission regarding the use of vehicles was taken by the BJP candidate and as such the notice was served," the returning officer said.

Action would be taken against the candidate after the receipt of the reply and if it was not received within 24 hours, it will be considered that he has accepted that the model code of conduct has been violated, he said.
