New Delhi, March 14 : Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today said if being a Dalit was the criteria for becoming PM, then he is the suitable candidate.
"If there has to be any Prime Minister from among Dalit leaders, why Mayawati should become PM. Why not Ram Vilas Paswan," the LJP chief told PTI when asked to comment on the projection of Mayawati as first Dalit PM in the country.
Paswan claimed that he has handled a number of portfolios in his long political career and every time discharged his responsibilities with finesse.
This is not the first time Paswan has openly expressed his ambitions to become the prime minister.
Earlier, National Dalit Front (NDF) led by Paswan had announced that it would support his bid for the prime ministership, arguing it wants to see a Dalit on the top job.
On asked whether he himself nurses any desire to become the PM, Paswan said, "what difference does any desire make? There is no vacancy for PM's post but people are endlessly giving their applications." On whether he has also given his application for the post, Paswan said in a lighter vein, "my application is there for a long time."
