GUWAHATI, Mar 2 : The Mising community of Assam pitched up their demand for more representations from their respective communities in parliament as the Lok Sabha polls neared.
Representatives of the Mising tribe alleged that the community continues to languish in Lakhimpur district despite forming a majority among voters. The All Guwahati Mising Kebang (AGMK), a Mising organization, said despite the tribe forming a majority of voters in Lakhimpur, only three members from the community have been elected to parliament so far.
"Misings are the second largest tribe in Assam. In Lakhimpur, Misings are a majority and command about four lakh votes. Despite this, different political parties keep sidelining members of the community while nominating candidates. As a result, our grievances and demands are not properly highlighted in parliament," said AGMK president Narendra Nath Tae.
In the run-up to the polls, AGMK general secretary Ashwani Kumar Pegu alleged that most of the political parties have not nominated members from the Mising community. "We are not pointing fingers at any particular political party. We have closely observed almost all parties and have seen a tendency not to give tickets to members from the Mising tribe in the Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency. So, we will support only to the party which gives due importance to the Mising tribe in the Lakhimpur constituency," Pegu said.
On the other hand, the Asom-Miyan (Asomiya) Parishad (AMP), a socio-economic development organization for the minority community, demanded an exclusive administrative set-up for the development of Muslims in the state. The organization told a press conference here on Sunday that the national register for citizens should be updated soon and identity cards should be issued to the citizens.
