GUWAHATI: The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in Assam on Monday sounded the poll bugle, making a scathing attack on the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government for its ‘non-performance’.
Addressing a press conference after declaring the names of party candidates, AGP president Chandramohan Patowari alleged that Congress had failed to deliver despite being in power for a considerable period of time.
“All Congress MPs from the State and successive Congress governments have failed to highlight the problems of Assam before the Centre,” Patowari said.He said the state Congress leaders had all become ‘servants’ of Delhi, working against the interest of the state.
“Last year, after the devastating floods, we all expected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to offer financial aid to the state. But surprising all, he provided huge funds to another flood-hit state Bihar. Is this his love for Assam that has sent him to Rajya Sabha,” Patowari asked.
“Many flood-affected victims are still living on embankments, but the Congress governments both at the Centre and the State do not have either any will or funds to come to their aid,” he said. The AGP sought to take credit for whatever development that Assam has seen in recent years.
The AGP president challenged the Congress to give a single proof substantiating the commitment of Manmohan Singh to Assam.Equating the Congress with Duryodhan of ‘Mahabharata’, Patowari said the party was trying to win the upcoming elections by using force. But they (Congress) must know that AGP and the people of Assam will foil all their evil designs, he said.
He said the Congress was jittery over the AGP-BJP understanding as evident from its criticism of the AGP’s regionalism.
The BJP has decided to contest in eight of the 14 constituencies while the AGP will contest in the remaining six. “As per our understanding, the BJP will be the senior partner in Lok Sabha polls and the AGP in Assembly elections.
But we’re not a partner of the NDA as yet,” the AGP president clarified. The AGP has fielded Sarbananda Sonowal in Dibrugarh, Arun Kumar Sarma (Lakhimpur), Joseph Toppo (Tezpur), Bhupen Roy (Barpeta), Sabda Rabha (Kokrajhar) and Gunin Hazarika (Kaliabor). The BJP and the Congress are expected to announce the names of their candidates by March 15.
