Will quit if corruption charges proved: Meghalaya speaker

Shillong , Feb 27 : Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Bindo M Lanong today dared his deputy Sanbor Shullai to prove the corruption charges levelled against him saying that he would step down if the charges are proved.
"If the deputy speaker can prove my involvement in corruption, I will gracefully step down and if he cannot prove, then Shullai should resign," Lanong said, a day after the deputy speaker alleged his involvement in illegal appointment of officials in the Assembly.

The speaker has informed the Chief Minister Donkupar Roy about Shullai&aposs alleged misbehavior."If the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government does not act on the matter, then I will do it on my own using my discretionary powers as a Speaker," Lanong said.

Shullai is alleged to have verbally abused Lanong when the latter refused to comply with his deputy&aposs request. It is also alleged that Shullai had banged the table and created a ruckus in the Speaker&aposs chamber.

Lanong said that Shullai&aposs action has lowered the dignity of the office of Deputy Speaker.

Meanwhile, Shullai has denied the allegations of the Speaker and termed the report as an attempt to defame his him.
