Shillong : President of the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Meghalaya deputy chief minister Hopingstone Lyngdoh has cleared all doubts by assuring his party's total support towards the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) government.
Simmering doubts emanated in the ruling front after Lyngdoh met prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh in New Delhi along with the AICC leader Oscar Fernandez and leader of the opposition D.D.Lapang.
Clearing the doubts, Lyngdoh told a group of newsmen today, “My party is committed to make the MPA government complete its five years terms."
Downplaying his recent meetings with the prime minister along with the state Congress leaders as ‘politically insignificance’ to politics in the state, Lyngdoh clarified that it was a co-incidence that he met the prime minister and Union home minister along with the Congress leaders.
“I had gone to meet the prime minister and the Union home minister to talk about the separate Khasi-Jaintia state and to talk about the inter state border dispute with Assam”, stated Lyngdoh, adding, “I am not a man who will give up with my commitment that I had given even if some other parties or people do”.
The HSPDP leader's assurance assumed significance because it has two MLAs in the 32 members MPA government that has thin edged majority. The MPA comprises of five parties and three independent legislators in the 60-member House.
On his pet subject for creating a separate Khasi-Jaintia state, the deputy chief minister claimed that Union home minister P.Chidambaram was inclined to the idea but wanted to deliberate with him on the issue only after the Lok Sabha elections. He also said that he had urged upon the Union government to settle the interstate boundary dispute with Assam at the earliest.
