‘Insensitive’ tag on Cong in Manipur

The Manipur unit of the BJP has accused the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre of being “insensitive” to daily bloodletting in the state and demanded that home minister P. Chidambaram come to the state and take emergency measures to restore law and order.
“The state witnesses daily fake encounter killings by the security forces and police. The Okram Ibobi Singh government has failed to check extortion and curb militancy. No life is safe either from the government forces or militants. But the UPA government is not taking the Manipur situation seriously,” the BJP organisation secretary in-charge of the Northeast, P. Chandrashekhar Rao, today told the media at the end of a three-day-long assessment of the situation.
Rao arrived here on Monday to assess the prevailing situation and discuss strategies of the party for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. He left Imphal for Delhi this afternoon.
“Chidambaram should come here, take stock of the situation, talk to political parties and the people and take emergency decisions to restore a semblance of order. Lawlessness rules Manipur,” the BJP leader demanded.
Thousands of people died during the seven-year-long rule by Ibobi Singh government, he alleged.
“If the UPA took a serious note of the recent Mumbai attacks, it should also pay serious attention to the killings in the Northeast,” he said.
Alleging that the management of the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border was ineffective, Rao demanded the border be sealed effectively.
“Until and unless the international border is sealed effectively, arms, drugs and militants will continue to pour into Manipur. The state is flooded with arms. The source of money that is used to buy the weapons should also be checked. As long as weapons are allowed to come in freely, violence will never go away from Manipur,” he said.
He also alleged that the Centre never responded promptly to choking of supplies of essential commodities because of blockades and bandhs along national highways.
“Is Manipur not included on the map of the Congress party?” he asked.
On the forthcoming parliamentary elections, the BJP leader hinted that the party would contest both the Inner and Outer seats in the state.
“Negotiations are on with the non-Congress and non-CPI parties here for fielding common candidates against the Congress. The positive signals are coming,” he claimed.
The BJP is requesting the regional parties in Manipur to lend it support in the Lok Sabha elections while it promised them that it would make maximum sacrifice for the regional parties in the Assembly elections.
The BJP central election committee is likely to make a declaration about contesting both the seats in Manipur by the end of this month.
The Inner seat is represented by Th. Meinya Singh of the Congress while the Outer one is represented by Mani Charenamei, an Independent.
