Kokrajhar, Jan 11 : The Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) has decided to field candidates in two constituencies, Kokrajhar and Mangaldoi, in the parliamentary election and will support its ally, the Congress, in 12 others.
Speaking to the media after a general meeting of the party’s central committee at Barama in Baksa today, the BPF president and chief of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Hagrama Mohilary, said, “The party has decided to contest from two constituencies of Kokrajhar and Mangoldoi. We will support the Congress in the rest.”
Today’s general meeting was held to select official candidates of the party. A majority of the party workers were in favour of sitting MP Sansuma Kunggur Bwiswmuthiary from Kokrajhar. No name, however, came up from Mangaldoi.
Sources said Bwiswmuthiary’s name would be announced formally after he applies for the ticket. “We will abide by the party’s wishes. The final decision will be taken in a central working committee meeting on January 20,” Mohilary said.
Along with Bwiswmuthiary, BTC deputy chief Kampha Borgoyari’s name was also in the race for the Kokrajhar seat.
For Mangaldoi, party workers demanded that a local candidate be fielded, since, according to them, MPs from other parties did not use the allotted funds for the benefit of the constituency. They also pointed out that nearly two lakh voters have been voting for them in Mangaldoi.
Three Assembly segments, Udalguri, Kaligaon and Majbat, under the constituency falls under the BTC administrated districts.
The party also announced that its triennial conference would be held at Kajalgaon II in Chirang on February 5, 6 and 7.
