Assam parties to move Centre to expedite work
Guwahati, Jan 8 : Parties across the political spectrum, in a rare show of unanimity, today decided to move the Centre to expedite sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border to end the use of Assam as a “terror corridor”.
The unanimity on the need to seal the border at the earliest comes in the wake of the serial blasts in October and this month that left over 90 persons dead and several hundred injured.
The development also comes a day after chief minister Tarun Gogoi apprised a conference of chief ministers in New Delhi about the threat posed to the state by cross-border terrorism and its dangerous consequences on the internal security of the country.
The chief minister had emphasised the need to increase vigil along the state’s international border.
In a similar tone, the Assembly today decided to adopt a resolution asking the Centre to clear the hurdles and expedite fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The state government had earlier set a 2010 deadline to complete the fencing along the state’s 267.3-km border with Bangladesh.
The Assembly took the decision after Assam accord implementation minister Bhumidhar Barman cited some practical difficulties faced by the state government in completing the fencing.
He said central agencies like National Building Construction Corporation Ltd, Border Road Organisation and central PWD involved in border fencing have been very slow in erecting the fence. He added that in Karimganj sector, a vast tract of land in the heart of the town would fall under no-man’s land if the border was fenced and hence the matter should be taken up with Bangladesh government for some mutual adjustment.
Earlier, AGP legislator Girindra Kumar Boruah suggested that the Assembly should adopt a resolution asking the Centre to clear the hurdles that have led to the delay in fencing.
He said the Centre was not according as much importance to guarding the Indo-Bangla border as it does in protecting the Indo-Pak border. After so many years of independence, the Indo-Bangla border still remained porous, he added.
New Delhi, Boruah said, should be pressured to take immediate steps in the interest of the “future of the state”.
Barman said the state government would welcome any initiative to jointly move the Centre in this regard.
Parliamentary affairs minister Bharat Narah said the government would adopt a resolution soon.
