Jaitley meets Rajnath; Uma ‘comes home’

New Delhi, Mar 19 : Sulking BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Thursday met party president Rajnath Singh with whom the lawyer-politician is upset over an appointment.

Jaitley drove to the residence of Singh and was with him for about an hour. He did not speak to the media after leaving Singh's residence.

Jaitley has been sulking and is upset with the BJP chief over appointment of businessman Sudhanshu Mittal as party's co-convenor of North-East. Displaying his unhappiness, Jaitley has been boycotting the meetings of the party's Central Election Committee.

Jaitley has maintained that he would not attend the CEC meetings till Mittal was removed. Singh, on his part, has ruled out revoking his decision to appoint Mittal.

Meanwhile, Bhartiya Janashakti Party President Uma Bharti met BJP leader L.K. Advani and said it was her "rashtra dharma" to support the saffron party and its prime ministerial candidate in the Lok Sabha polls.

"I have not done any favour to BJP or Advaniji by supporting them. Neither do I want them to feel this support as a favour. I have just fulfilled my duty to the nation. It is my rashtra dharma," she said.

Bharti, who had formed the Bharytiya Janshakti after being expelled from the BJP, said she would extend "maximum cooperation (to BJP) within my capacity".

Describing her meeting with Advani as the "homecoming of a daughter," Bharti said "Advani had always been a father figure for her".

Asked whether her move was prompted by lack of funds for her party, "I have said before that our party lacks funds to fight elections but let the country debate and tell me whom I should support. It is obviously Lal Krishna Advani who has been the face of the Ayodhya movement." She also denied reports of her joining the party and insisted that Bhartiya Janshakti party was still in existence.

The meeting comes five years after Bharti stormed out of a party meeting chaired by Advani accusing him of favouring certain leaders.

Rajnath Vs Jaitley: Who will blink first?

The rift in the BJP between its president Rajnath Singh and senior leader Arun Jaitley shows no signs of healing and the party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) could be the first casualty amid speculation that it may be wound up.
As RSS intervened to ensure that the Singh-Jaitley stalemate did not give new worries to the BJP before the polls, sources close to Jaitley said the lawyer-turned politician is unlikely to attend today’s (March 17) CEC meeting till businessman Sudhanshu Mittal is removed as BJP’s co-convenor of North East region. Jaitley has been gunning for Mittal.

Singh also had a meeting with BJP’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani in the night where the stalemate is understood to have figured.

Advani has insisted there was no rift in the party. “This issue may make a good story for you but there are no differences within the party,” Advani told reporters in New Delhi. (Read more)

Party sources said the BJP may wind up the CEC on Tuesday itself after it authorises Advani to finalise the party’s remaining Lok Sabha candidates. Roughly 100 nominees are yet to be declared.

Party sources said the authorisation could be given to Advani along with party chief Rajnath Singh and the meeting would be held in Advani’s residence.

Advani had to convene a separate meeting at his residence on Friday to finalise candidates of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh as Jaitley kept himself away from the CEC meet. Mittal however attended a key meeting of the party at the party headquarters in New Delhi to decide upon the seats for  Assam.

The meeting chaired by party chief Rajnath Singh was also attended by North-East convenor SS Ahluwalia among others. Rajnath Singh has ruled out Mittal’s removal.

When asked if he could offer to resign in the wake of the stand taken by Jaitley, Mittal said,”I am ready to jump into a river, if the party asks me to do so. I will do everything that I am told to do.”

Jaitley had shown his displeasure at Mittal’s appointment by keeping away from the Central Election Committee meeting of the BJP on March 13.

RSS general secretary Suresh Soni called up Jaitley on Saturday night to find a solution to the stand-off, sources said.

Senior leaders Venkaiah Naidu and Ravi Shankar Prasad said efforts were underway to find a solution.

Internal strife continues to trouble the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party's key election strategist, its General Secretary Arun Jaitley continues to make headlines over a reported rift between him and party President Rajnath Singh.
On Saturday he arrived late for the party's IT vision document launch. The launch was important because the BJP is trying to project itself as an IT-savvy political party.
Jaitley, who gave the party's Central Election Committee meeting a miss on Friday, arrived 10 minutes late at Saturday's launch - this even as BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani and Rajnath Singh were already there. The function had begun when Jailey walked in.
The General Secretary is reportedly miffed over Rajnath Singh's move to appoint Sudhanshu Mittal as in-charge of the poll campaign in Assam and joint in-charge of campaign in the northeast.
However, Mittal and senior BJP leader Venkiah Naidu say there are no differences with Jaitley.
"Arun Jaitley is a senior leader. I am not aware of any differences. It is all in the imagination. I have a history of 30 years in party. I have worked in various positions in the party. I am working in Assam and I don't think that Arun ji has said anything of this kind," said Mittal.
"There is no trouble in the NDA. Jaitley was there in the morning, afternoon and evening and attended all meetings. He had an issue which will be sorted out. There is no fight over who will be the leader. Advani is our undisputed leader. He is our trump card and there is no one of comparision in our opponents," added Venkaiah Naidu.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi also stressed that there was "no problem" between Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley.
Claiming that the NDA would come to power with a clear majority, he said that although BJP and BJD had just split, there were others which had joined the party like Chautala and Ajit Singh.
Joshi said while the BJP was tasting success in various state elections, the Congress was losing everywhere. On the Third Front, Joshi quipped "it is already third."
The BJP leader also said that construction of the Ram temple would be included in the party's manifesto.

Dejected Jaitley attends BJP programme

New Delhi, Mar 14 : A day after skipping a key party meeting apparently to display his displeasure over an appointment made by BJP President Rajnath Singh, party general secretary Arun Jaitley today attended an event at the party headquarters where L K Advani and Singh were present.

Jaitley arrived late to the event where Advani unveiled the party's IT vision and shared the dias with party president Singh.

The BJP general secretary is sulking over the appointment of Sudhanshu Mittal, a businessman, as co-convener of North-East Affairs, over which he has strong reservations.

Sources said by not attending the party's Central Election Committee meeting to finalise Lok Sabha candidates for various states yesterday, Jaitley was letting known his displeasure.

Mittal himself told reporters today that he did not feel that Jaitley would be opposed to his appointment and that he was also in the party for long.
