SC issues notice to Yeddyurappa

7:56 PM

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah on a petition by seven rebel legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party who were disqualified from the house for expressing their lack of confidence in the chief minister.

An apex court bench of Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice Cyriac Joseph issued the notice after senior counsel Rohinton Nariman told the court that an important question of law was involved in the matter.

The petition by Gopala Krishana Belur and six others has challenged their disqualification by the speaker and the Karnataka High Court's Oct 29 decision to uphold it.

The legislators attracted disqualification after they met Governor H R Bhardwaj and expressed their lack of confidence in Yeddyurappa.

Taking cognizance of their action, Bopaiah disqualified them from the house.

Rattled govt thinks of e-auction in contracts over 100 cr

7:46 PM
Amitav Ranjan

Under pressure from the Opposition and the Supreme Court on the 2G scam, the government plans to usher transparency in all purchases and contracts whereby all asset sales and PPP tenders above Rs 100 crore would be conducted via e-auction.

Sources said that a proposal is being prepared for first-stage clearance by a Committee of Secretaries to extend the “application of 3G spectrum auction methodology for other sectors, except for roads and highways”.

Nine firms participated in the online auction for 3G licences that ended after 34 days and 183 rounds of bidding last May. It fetched the government Rs 67,718.95 cr; however, the method was not given credence until days after the CAG report surfaced in the Supreme Court.

It was first pushed by the ministry only on October 27 after the CAG report held former Telecom Minister A Raja guilty for losses pegged at Rs 1.76 lakh crore — a figure arrived by extrapolating the earning in the 3G auction. Sources said that the new methodology has not found complete acceptance within the ministry as the draft is considered sketchy with “no serious thinking” on the threshold limit or the sectors it would cover.

BJP a drama company: Singhvi

7:45 PM
New Delhi: Back as Congress spokesman after a gap of about one-and-a-half months, Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Tuesday accused the BJP of “double standards” and “crass hypocrisy” on the issue of corruption, and compared the party to a “drama company”.

Addressing a press briefing here, he said: “On issues of corruption, the BJP can do, and does, no better than a drama company. It indulges in mere breast-beating with a double face and forked tongue.”

Singhvi had been asked not to brief the media after the Congress’s Kerala unit lodged a protest with the party high command about his appearance in a lottery case in the Kerala High Court. They said this could hurt the party’s chances in the local body elections. On Monday, the party decided to reinstate him after he reportedly told the leadership that his court appearance was an error of judgement.

Listing a series of irregularities during the NDA regime, Singhvi said the then government had not offered a Supreme Court-monitored CBI probe in any of the cases. He said there was “no CBI, no ED, no JPC” to investigate the matter.

Stating that “Karnataka re-defines corruption”, he said the BJP’s response was one of “abject surrender” instead of firm action.

BJP demonstrates against women molestation

9:03 PM
New Delhi, Nov 27 : Hundreds of activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) North East Sampark Cell (NESC) staged a demonstration at the Jantar Mantar, protesting against the growing incidents of molestation and rape of women from North-East, here on Friday.

The demonstration was lead by senior BJP leaders like Nirmala Sitharaman.

The protesters which included large numbers of students demanded that the culprits behind the recent gangrape of a Mizo BPO employee in south Delhi be brought to book immediately and urgent measures be taken to ensure the safety and security of women from the North-East region.

Sitharaman demanded that the Union Home Ministry convene an emergency meeting and assure people of the North East that their children studying and working in Delhi were safe.

The said the party would raise in Parliament the issue of their safety.

Vijendra Gupta, President, Delhi BJP, said that the crime graph was on the rise and the common man was suffering and held the Sheila Dikshit Government responsible. He demanded that the guilty be brought to book.

Member of the Parliament, P Kabindra Purkayastha also demanded immediate action against the guilty and said the issue would be raised in Parliament.

Sunil Deodhar, S C National Convenor, said, “Delhi has witnessed 15 cases of rape involving victims from the North-East since 2009.”

Citing recent instances, where the Cell intervened to secure justice for the victims, he said the party would spare no stone unturned to protect the respect and dignity of the people from North East and to ensure that they were not humiliated and the culprits were brought to book.

No 'politics of vote' in Assam, says Varun Gandhi

1:48 AM
Guwahati, Nov 26 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kicked off its campaign for next year's assembly elections in Assam, with MP Varun Gandhi claiming his party would desist from indulging in politics for votes.

'We are not fighting against the Congress o0r the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) but instead fighting against poverty, corruption and for the well being of the downtrodden,' Gandhi, the newly appointed election head in Assam, told a public rally in Doomdoma in eastern Assam.

Gandhi is on a three-day visit to Assam and is scheduled to address at least a dozen public meetings across the state.

'We are here to seek confidence votes rather than politics of vote. Given a mandate, the BJP would take the state ahead by 100 years,' the young MP said amid thunderous applause from the nearly 5,000 strong crowd.

Assembly polls are due in Assam in about three to four months from now, with the BJP likely to fight the elections alone.

'We are confident of doing very well in the elections as we are focusing on issues relating to the people rather then trying to win the elections with money or muscle power,' Gandhi said.

'I would like to see candidates getting ticket not based on their wealth or influence, but those who are interested in working with the commoners at the grassroots.'

The AGP had a pre-poll understanding with the BJP in the 2001 assembly polls and again in the parliamentary election of last year.

The AGP-BJP combine was routed by the Congress in 2001, while in the parliamentary election the AGP fared poorly although the BJP managed to up its tally at the expense of the regional party.

BJP claims Delhi has become 'crime and rape capital'

12:31 AM
New Delhi, Nov 26 : Claiming that Delhi has become ''crime and rape capital'', Leader of the Opposition Vijay Kumar Malhotra today said women are not safe in the capital even after having a woman Chief Minister. ''The city has a woman Chief Minister, but women are not safe here. Delhi has become crime and rape capital,'' Prof Malhotra told mediapersons on second day of winter session of the Assembly.

He was referring to an incident in which a 30-year-old BPO employee was gangraped last night while she was on her way to home. Five men allegedly kidnapped the woman, hailing from Manipur, when she was dropped off after work at Dhaula Kuan in her office cab. The BJP leader alleged that Ms Shiela Dikshit has been escaping from her responsibility by saying that the Delhi police was not under her government's control.

Ms Dikshit while commenting on the incident, said the law and order subject was with the Lt Governor and the Union Home Ministry.

First time since 2002 riots, Muslims vote for BJP Plus

5:45 AM
New Delhi: For the first time after the 2002 Gujarat riots, there is evidence to suggest that Muslims have voted in favour of an alliance that includes the BJP.
First time since 2002 riots, Muslims vote for BJP Plus
The BJP-JD(U) combine won 40 of 51 Assembly segments in seven minority concentrated districts (MCDs) of Bihar -- Araria (41.2% Muslim population), Kishanganj (67.8%), Purnea (36.9%), Katihar (42.8%, Sitamarhi (21.2%), West Champaran (21.5%) and Darbhanga (22.8%).

The RJD- LJP combine, on the other hand, managed only five seats from these districts. The BJP alone took 27 seats in these districts while 13 went to the JD (U).
The victory margin of BJP-JDU candidates in most constituencies -- barring 12 constituencies -- was over 10,000 votes.
The Congress, which had come out with a special programme for 90 MCDs across the country after the Sachar Committee report on the plight of Muslims, won only three seats in these 51 segments.
The RJD too managed only three seats while ally LJP of Ram Vilas Paswan, who quit the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre after the Gujarat riots, had to make do with two seats. Among the victors from the MCDs were three Independents.
First time since 2002 riots, Muslims vote for BJP Plus
That Lalu's M-Y politics is no longer a match-winner can also be gauged from the fact that the RJD stood second in only 17 constituencies while LJP managed the No. 2 position in only eight.
There was some consolation for the Congress though -- the party came second in eight constituencies while Sharad Pawar's NCP stood second in four. Women in Bihar too turned out in strength to vote this time. The overall voting percentage went up to 52.4 per cent from 45.85 per cent in October 2005.
Women participation stood at 54.85 per cent as against 50.77 per cent recorded for men in this election. This is a clear departure from the past -- women participation in October 2005 was 44.49 per cent as against 47.02 per cent for men.
While there are no statistics to suggest that women turned out to vote in favour of the Nitish Kumar-led combine, it is being pointed out that his government reserved 50 per cent seats for women in local panchayats and offered bicycles to high school girls.

Nitish mania sweeps Bihar

7:19 AM
Patna: The NDA alliance in Bihar, led by JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar, stamped its authority on the state on Wednesday after phenomenally resurgent mandate propelled the alliance to a second term in office.
Battle for Bihar: JD-U-BJP gets absolute majority
The absolute-majority verdict left no other option for Opposition parties and leaders, including Lalu Prasad Yadav, but to go back to the drawing board and introspect. By early afternoon, Nitish Kumar - along with the BJP - had sprinted past the Opposition, widening the gap as the day progressed.
The NDA alliance finally won 207 seats in the 243-member Assembly. Of these, the JD(U) bagged 116 seats and the BJP 91. On the other hand, the RJD-LJP alliance suffered major reverses bagging only 24 seats -- the RJD 21 and LJP 3. The alliance had 64 last time.
Congress too had a major setback winning only 4 seats compared to the 9 it had won in 2005. Others, including Independents, won 8 seats. Nitish Kumar and his government will be sworn in on Friday at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna, party sources said.
The emphatic mandate for Nitish Kumar declares that Bihar has finally transcended its caste politics and voted for an administration that provided good governance. Two things that aptly describe this victory are improved law and order in the state and good roads.
The caste configuration of the RJD-LJP and Lalu's trite slogans of Dalit pride has fallen by the wayside, analysts said. LJP chief Ramvilas Paswan might well be completely marginalised in Bihar politics, they feel.
Lalu Prasad Yadav has also lost the support of the Muslim community which has voted en masse for the JD(U), irrespective of its alliance with the BJP. This has very little to do with the fact that Nitish put his foot down on the possibility of Narendra Modi campaigning for the BJP, political analysts feel. "Narendra Modi is not a factor in Bihar politics," they said, adding, "Muslims have voted only for Nitish Kumar."
Battle for Bihar: JD-BJP gets absolute majority
To add some Rabri insult to Lalu's injury, the former chief minister has lost in both seats she contested from -- Raghopur and Sonepur. The Congress had hoped to ride on Rahul Gandhi's charisma but could not make a dent again.
After the landslide win, Nitish Kumar first thanked the women of the state saying they have contributed more to his victory. He said the government's hard work has paid off and that the mandate proves the people have voted for development and progress in Bihar. "We have been among the people. This means a lot still needs to be done. The work must go on," he said.
He added: "I didn't have a magic wand to force this victory. We have the trust of the people and the will to work harder." He said the verdict marks a "new story" for Bihar and it will have its effects outside the state too. The poll verdict will be a disappointment for those politicking on the basis of caste in Bihar, he said, adding the people no longer want to go back to the "age of darkness".
Nitish Kumar also asserted that the alliance between JD(U) and BJP will continue in Bihar. "The alliance will continue and both will share power," a beaming Kumar told reporters.
Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said Bihar has voted to change its future. He said Nitish and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi gave people hope; their work washed away the fear and despair people had felt during the previous reigns. To add some Rabri insult to Lalu's injury, the former chief minister has lost in both seats she contested from -- Raghopur and Sonepur. Battle for Bihar: JD-BJP gets absolute majority
"When the alliance won in 2005, people dismissed it as a negative vote perpetuated by the anger the electorate felt towards the last regime. It is a positive vote this term," he said. Jaitley also took a dig at the Congress party which has fared dismally these elections.
"Today's victory is a message to national politics. Today's victory says meritorious leadership has triumphed over dynastic politics - the kind that depends on family glamour," he said.
Surprisingly, the BJP has made bold strides in the NDA alliance by winning 91 seats, a significant gain from its 55 last time. This also indicates that BJP has comparatively done better than the JD(U) these Bihar elections. The BJP, in fact, has swept urban Bihar.
"There is a new hope for Bihar. It reaffirms many political myths will go underground. The biggest myth is a Congress resurgence. Congress is no longer relevant in any part of the country," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javedekar said
The counting of votes for all 243 Assembly constituencies began this morning amid tight security. Counting for the Banka parliamentary constituency, where a by-election was held, began simultaneously at 8 am.
Counting was taken up in 42 centres, mostly in the district headquarter towns, where central paramilitary forces were deployed. A total of 3,523 candidates have been in the fray including 1,342 Independents.
In the outgoing House, the ruling parties JD(U) and BJP had 88 and 55 seats respectively. RJD and Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP had 54 and 10 respectively. Congress had 9 seats.

Have no magic wand, but people's trust: Nitish
Nitish Kumar today termed the victory of his NDA-JD(U) alliance as a victory for development and pledged to work harder in his second innings. "We have no magic wand, but people's trust. I will need to work harder than I did in the last five years and I will not hesitate," 59-year-old Kumar told a press conference here.
The poll verdict, he said, would disappoint those doing politics on the basis of caste and the mandate would mark a "new story" in Bihar and have its effect outside the state. "The outcome of the elections also proves beyond doubt that it is a victory for development and for the people of the state," he said.
In a veiled attack on the RJD-LJP alliance and the Congress, Kumar said, "It is unfortunate that these people have not seen the writing on the wall. The trends are positive and reflects that those making false claims or promises will face the music."
Without naming RJD chief Lalu Prasad who had criticised the exit polls predicting a victory for the NDA, Kumar said, "Media should not be criticised for its projection that NDA will pull off a landslide victory in Bihar. People should refrain from unnecessary criticism of the media... if you live up to people's aspirations and expectations, you will definitely be rewarded," Kumar said.
"Now I feel the people have thrust on my shoulder more responsibilities and I have to continue to make efforts with full dedication." Kumar noted there has been massive improvement in the law and order situation in the state in the past five years of NDA rule.
Pointing out there were only stray incidents of violence during the staggered polls spread over a month, he thanked the Election Commission for its efforts to ensure a fair and peaceful voting.
Kumar said the Commission will definitely realise there was a change on the law and order front in the state.

JD-U and BJP sweep Bihar, RJD and Congress humiliated

6:32 AM
Patna, Nov 24 (IANS): Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today poised to lead his Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and its ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to an emphatic win in the Assembly elections, crushing long-time foe Lalu Prasad and wiping out the Congress in one of India's most populous states.

Reaping the harvest of his widely-hailed development plank of the past five years, trends indicated that the ruling combine would sweep 199 of the 243 seats in the Assembly, stunning friends and foes alike.

While a shocked former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad remained shuttered at his home, a bruised Congress congratulated the Chief Minister and pledged to introspect after indications that it would win only seven seats -- less than the nine it had in the outgoing Assembly.

BJP leader Arun Jaitley called the verdict a victory for "meritorious leadership over dynastic politics" -- referring to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi who campaigned extensively in the State calling Nitish Kumar a failed Chief Minister.

Wild celebrations erupted in the offices of the JD-U and BJP both in the State capital Patna and in New Delhi. Party activists burst crackers, beat drums and danced to victory songs.

Although both the JD-U and BJP, who have been aligned since 1996, made substantial gains over their 2005 strength, leaders of both credited the win largely to the charisma of Nitish Kumar, whose past is rooted in the country's now virtually defunct socialist movement.

The ruling alliance made substantial gains all across the State, decimating Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of Ram Vilas Paswan even in some of its known bastions.

The RJD and LJP, which had vowed to unseat Nitish Kumar, were likely to end up with about 30 seats, dealing Lalu Prasad and Paswan -- who until a few years ago were considered kingmakers in national politics -- a terrible blow.

With officials starting the counting of an estimated 28 million votes polled from Oct 21 to Nov 20 at 8 am across 42 centres today, Nitish Kumar got an undisguised thumbs-up. In the process, some of the RJD and LJP stalwarts were routed. Even RJD star and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, Lalu Prasad's wife, was trailing in both the constituencies she contested.

"We are happy and celebrating," BJP leader Sanjay Jha told IANS in Patna. Added his colleague Giriraj Singh: "Nitishji will be the Chief Minister again."

BJP's most prominent Muslim face, Shahnawaz Hussain, said the people had embraced the development programmes of Nitish Kumar and his own party. These included building an extensive network of roads and bridges in the State where none existed, strengthening the State's educational and health sectors, and providing various incentives to the disadvantaged.

"It is clear that people have voted for development and not for caste," Hussain, a former central Cabinet Minister, said. He added that the result would prove to be a watershed in Indian politics.

In New Delhi, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said: "People voted for an alliance that brought development as well as law and order to Bihar."

He said the loser was RJD's "15 years of jungle raj" - referring to the long rule of Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi.

Lalu Prasad's residence in the heart of Patna was deserted, its green gates firmly shut. Barring a handful of party leaders who quietly entered the house, the only people camping outside were journalists.

A dejected Congress meekly capitulated. "We would like to congratulate Nitish Kumar," party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said in New Delhi.

She said the Congress would analyse what went wrong with its election strategy in Bihar, where the party has steadily lost influence over the last few decades.

One Congress leader, who did not want to be identified, admitted that Rahul Gandhi had not clicked in Bihar. "Rahul failed to attract voters," he said.

After the end of the sixth round of voting on Saturday, exit polls predicted a sweep for the JD-U and BJP, which took office in 2005. At that time, Lalu Prasad had rubbished the exit polls.

AGP, BJP scout for partners for polls

6:02 AM
Guwahati, Nov 24 (IANS) Two of Assam's main opposition parties, the Asom Gana Parishad(AGP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are desperately scouting for potential partners to fight next year's assembly elections although there are no visible signs yet of any unified challenge to the ruling Congress that is eyeing a hat trick.

'In this age of coalition politics, opposition unity in Assam is a must or else the Congress party could find it easy to bounce back to power once again,' BJP's Assam unit president Ranjit Dutta told IANS.

The AGP, Assam's main opposition, recently snapped ties with the BJP, thereby leaving the opposition camp totally disjointed.

'We are almost ready to fight the elections alone and very confident of performing well. But at the same time we are also trying to work out some alliance with likeminded regional parties,' the BJP president said.

The BJP president was bitter about the AGP's decision to snap ties.

'AGP's decision to break the alliance was surprising indeed,' Dutta said.

AGP had a seat sharing arrangement with the BJP in the 2009 parliamentary elections but the regional party managed to win just one of the 14 seats, while the BJP grabbed four seats - the AGP in fact was down from two seats in 2004.

AGP, however, is trying to put up a brave front.

'The people of Assam are in favour of a regional party to rule Assam considering that the Congress government in the past two successive terms has unleashed a reign of corruption in the state,' AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary told IANS.

'We are talking with smaller regional parties for some kind of an understanding to fight the elections.'

With the opposition camp fractured and no signs yet of any tangible pre-poll tie-ups, some leaders from within the AGP too are worried.

'I don't think it was right for the AGP leadership to have snapped the alliance with the BJP,' senior AGP leader Atul Bora said.

However, parties like the Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) are playing the cat and mouse game.

'As of now, we are not talking of any alliance and keen to go alone in the elections. But in politics nothing is ruled out and we are ready to tie up with any secular party other then the BJP and the Congress,' AUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said.

'It is true that without opposition unity the Congress party could be benefited.'

But the Congress seems unfazed.

'We are almost sure to win the elections for the third straight term. No combinations can challenge us since we worked during the last two terms for the welfare of the people,' Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told IANS.

'Let the AGP and the BJP look for partners.'

BJP to raise influx as poll issue in Assam

12:27 AM
GUWAHATI, Nov 22 – BJP national general secretary Vijay Goel on Sunday asserted that the political rights of the citizens of Assam can only be safeguarded when the names of all illegal Bangladeshis are deleted from the Voters List. He demanded of the government to complete this mission before the coming Assembly elections.

Addressing media persons here after the BJP, State executive meet, Goel outlined that political and land rights would be the two themes of BJP’s strategy for the Assembly elections. Speaking of elections, he said that the national party gave the highest priority to Assam and would be organizing its national executive in Guwahati on January 8 and 9 next year. A total of 400 delegates led by national party president Nitin Gadkari will attend the meet.

Goel said that parties who do not raise their voices against the Bangladeshis and their nefarious design are the ‘traitors of the State’. “In 1991, Assam had four Muslim majority districts. In 2001 the number increased to six and in 2011 the State will have 10 Muslim majority districts,” said Goel regretting that despite the alarming demographic changes, the Congress government was sitting idle. He warned that this demographic change has already threatened the existence of the indigenous people, and that this ‘demographic tumour’ would further spread from lower and middle Assam to the rest of the State as well.

It needs to be mentioned here that the State BJP executive today expressed concern over the fact that the State has nearly 80 lakh Muslim population, but out of which only 22 lakh are indigenous Assamese Muslims.

“The final battle of the people of Assam is for their land rights and political rights,” said Goel calling upon the people to stop selling land to suspected Bangladeshi infiltrators. He insisted on stopping the practice of allotting land pattas on char areas as most of the chars are occupied by Bangladeshis. He pointed out that whenever a char is washed away, the inhabitants by virtue of holding pattas become eligible for resettlement on government land. “This is the biggest cause of destruction of Assam’s forest cover,” Goel added accusing that State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain and Revenue Minister Bhumidhar Barman are colluding to protect the Bangladeshis at the cost of the people of Assam and their rights.

On the other hand, the party will launch a agitation demanding expulsion of Bangladeshis and protection of political and land rights of the indigenous people on December 18 this year. This would be a jail bharao programme and 50,000 party members and supporters will participate in it.

BSY appears defiant, says has backing of 120 MLAs

3:38 AM

Bangalore, Nov 21 (PTI) Amidst indications that his party might consider replacing him, beleaguered Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today appeared to strike a defiant note saying he has the support of 120 MLAs and that there was no successor for him.

"In the evening, I will go to Delhi to meet our party members and give all details about Karnataka affairs. 110-120 MLAs are with me, not 10 or 20 or 40 people. Nobody is going to Delhi, just myself," he told reporters here.

Yeddyurappa, who is facing land scam charges, made the remarks after holding confabulations with his loyalists, including some ministers, at his official residence where they pledged their support to him and urged him to oppose any move to replace him.

"I will go to Delhi. I will meet (Arun) Jaitley, I will meet Sushma (Swaraj). I will meet (L K) Advani.

BJP high command summons Yeddyurappa, likely to axe him

1:27 AM
New Delhi: Amid heightened speculation that Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa may have to step down, the BJP high command Sunday summoned him to the capital.

The decision came at a meeting of senior leaders at party president Nitin Gadkari's residence to discuss the crisis in Karnataka.

Though there was no official word from the party, BJP sources said there was little option left but to remove Yeddyurappa as his continuance in office was taking the sting out of the party's attack on the UPA government in Parliament on corruption.

Senior party leaders LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitely and Rajnath Singh were present at the meeting.

Yeddyurappa was on Friday summoned to Delhi by Gadkari to explain his position to the central leadership.

The BJP’s Karnataka core committee including state unit president KS Vishwarappa, his predecessor Sadanand Gowda, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Jagdish Shettar also attended the meeting along with senior central leaders Arun Jaitley and Anant Kumar.

After the meeting, Jaitley had told reporters that the central leadership has heard the views of Yeddurappa and other Karnataka leaders and would take a decision after due deliberations with senior leaders LK Advani and others.

Karnataka: Yeddyurappa may go

11:06 PM
New Delhi/ Banglore: With the land scam involving its chief minister in Karnataka B S Yeddyurappa — where his children and in-laws are among the beneficiaries — stealing the thunder of the BJP campaign against the UPA, the main Opposition decided to act.
Karnataka: Yeddyurappa may go
Sources said effecting a leadership change in the state is one of the options under "serious consideration." The party top leadership went into a huddle and after a three-hour brainstorming decided to summon the Karnataka BJP leadership, including the CM to Delhi for "consultations".
The view gaining ground in the party -- and being reinforced by the CM's critics who are smarting after his recent victory during the no-confidence motion -- is that his continuance opens the BJP to the charge of double standards.
While the central leadership decided to sit up and take notice, the Yeddyurappa government decided to order a judicial probe into the denotification of government acquired land over the last 10 years. The Chief Minister is facing allegations of nepotism after it came to light that plots of government land were denotified and allotted to members of his family.
Karnataka: Yeddyurappa may go
The decision to order a probe was taken at a cabinet meeting. "With the Congress and JD(S) making consistent allegations over land denotification, the government has decided to order a judicial probe of all denotifications of the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board or any others over the last 10 years. The terms of reference and the panel will be announced later," Primary Education Minister Vishweshwar Kaggeri said.
Kaggeri said the Chief Minister's work has been appreciated and that the question of him quitting never came up at the cabinet meeting. The central leadership, sources said, decided to know the mind of the state unit before taking a final call. After holding consultations with the top state leaders, sources said an observer could be sent to Bangalore the know the views of the MLAs as well.
Even as the state government discussed the judicial probe, the opposition Janata Dal (S) filed a complaint of corruption and nepotism against the Chief Minister before the Karnataka Lok Ayukta and sought a probe into all denotifications carried out by the Yeddyurappa government.
"We filed a 580-page complaint before Lokayukta with specific allegations against the Chief Minister for denotifying valuable government land to favour members of his family, including his sons B Y Raghavendra and B Y Vijay Kumar, son-in-law Sohan Kumar and some others," JDS MLC Y S V Datta said. He claimed that the denotification scam amounted to Rs 5000 crore.
Karnataka: Yeddyurappa may go
He has sought a probe on denotification of 180 acres in 78 cases since the BJP came to power in June 2008. Yeddyurappa has abused his position of power by causing a loss to the state exchequer, the complaint says. "The Chief Minister should resign and order a probe if he has any moral authority. He cannot get away by saying these things will not be repeated," said JD(S) legislator M C Nanaiah.
In the midst of a full-blown crisis, Yeddyurappa took time off to visit a temple in Mysore and claimed to have made a promise not to repeat his mistakes. "'I have promised Lord Nanjundeshwara that I will not commit the same mistakes again," Yeddyurappa said.

BJP slams construction of big dams in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh

9:19 PM
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh has slammed the construction of the Lower Subansiri power project in Assam, which is expected to generate 7421 of million units (MU) hydro power electricity.

The project is located near North Lakhimpur on the Assam-Arunachal border.

Addressing a rally in Dhemaji District, Singh said dam lies in a high seismic zone and is a threat to people living in the lower reaches of River Subansiri.

He blamed the Congress governments in Assam for building huge dams without proper risk-related assessments.

Big dams should be built under special circumstances to solve the problem of drinking water and irrigation, and not for generating power only, Singh said.

He said 32 out of 168 dams, which are to be constructed in the province, are big one, and therefore, no big dam should be built in Arunachal Pradesh, which falls in the seismic zone.

India should have a policy with China on water-sharing to safeguard its rivers, Singh said. (ANI)

BJP perturbed over killing of Biharis in Assam

9:25 PM
PATNA: The BJP has expressed serious concern over killing of 22 Biharis in different parts of Assam. BJP spokesman Syed Shahnawaz Hussain on Wednesday asked the Assam government to protect Biharis in Assam and asked AICC president Sonia Gandhi to intervene in the matter.

About developments in Maharashtra in the wake of Adarsh Housing Society controversy, the BJP spokesman said resignation of chief minister Ashok Chavan was not enough. He demanded a probe by the joint parliamentary committee into the scam.

The BJP spokesman predicted three-fourth majority to the NDA in the Bihar elections. About the Tuesday's night shooting of a police officer in Patna, he blamed the RJD. "RJD leaders are claiming that they are coming to power. This has encouraged the criminals," he said.

The BJP will continue its election campaign during the Chhath festival too. The convenor of the election campaign committee Radhamohan Singh will campaign in Buxar on November 12 and Brahmpur on November 13. Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi will campaign in Goh, Obra, Sherghati, Gurua, Rafiganj, Sasaram, Brahmpur, Ramgarh, Chainpur, on November 11 to 13 and leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj in Buxar, Nokha, Sasaram and Chainpur on November 13.

Prithviraj Chavan new Maharashtra CM

3:47 AM
New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday selected Union Minister Prithviraj Chavan as the next chief minister of Maharashtra. He is likely to be sworn in later in the day.

The announcement of Prithvi Chavan's name was made by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on Wednesday.

A man with clean image and a staunch loyalist of the Gandhi family, Prithviraj Chavan succeeds Ashok Chavan who had to demit office in the wake of the Adarsh Society scam
Well-ensconced in New Delhi, AICC general secretary and Union Minister Prithviraj Chavan, though an efficient administrator who also enjoys a clean image, may not have the backing of state legislators. He is considered close to both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, and is said to coordinate between 7 RCR and 10 Janpath.
Congress sources said hours after Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was asked by Congress president Sonia Gandhi to submit his resignation to Governor K Sankarnarayanan, Union Ministers Prithviraj Chavan and Sushil Kumar Shinde appeared to be locked in the race to be his successor.

Late on Tuesday evening, the Congress Legislature Party, in the presence of central observers Pranab Mukherjee and A K Antony, passed a one-line resolution authorising the Congress president to pick the new chief minister of Maharashtra.
The Congress's coalition partner, the NCP, was learnt to be finalising a succession plan of its own. Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal is likely to be replaced by Ajit Pawar. Senior NCP leaders including Union Minister Praful Patel and veterans D P Tripathi and Tariq Anwar are scheduled to attend the NCP Legislature Party meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday in which Bhujbal's successor is likely to be picked, sources said.
Earlier on Tuesday, in a clean-up act clearly aimed at pre-empting the Opposition from raising the issue of alleged irregular allotments in the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society in Mumbai and alleged corruption in the Commonwealth Games, Sonia Gandhi decided to accept the resignation of Chief Minister Chavan. She also got CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi to quit the post of secretary, Congress Parliamentary Party.
Chavan had earlier offered his resignation to the Congress president in the wake of the controversy over the allotment of flats to his relatives in Adarsh. The Congress high command asked Mukherjee and Antony to submit a report, buying time before the visit of President Barack Obama to Mumbai. Chavan was asked to resign shortly after Obama flew out of India this morning.Party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who usually refrains from commenting on intra-party affairs, spelt out the criteria for Chavan's successor. He told reporters at Parliament House that the next CM should be "capable and (someone who) can deliver". Asked if the next CM has to be "clean", he said, "Of course".

Rahul's comments could have a bearing on Shinde's prospects. The Union Power Minister was chief minister of Maharashtra when Adarsh was given final clearance. One of his associates was also reported to have got a flat in the building. On Tuesday evening, there was apprehension in Congress circles that his return as CM could hand more ammunition to the Opposition.
Sources said former Union Minister Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil's advanced age -- he is 78 -- could go against him, as could the fact that he was a Shiv Sena Minister in the NDA government. Sonia Gandhi was learnt to have spoken to NCP chief Sharad Pawar earlier in the day. Both leaders were said to be disinclined to hand over the reins of the government of such a crucial state to a former Shiv Sena man.
State Agriculture Minister Balasaheb Thorat had "only an outside chance, if at all", sources said.
Earlier, Mukherjee had indicated that Chavan's resignation had been accepted on the basis of "perception". "I am not going to make a value judgement. It was not a regular inquiry commission... We went on certain aspects. Political decisions are taken many times on perception and based on certain facts," he said in New Delhi.

DIMAPUR, NOV 3 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to embark on a grand or rather noble initiative to ensure that the people of the north-east are not discriminated or feel alienated in the mainland of the country.

The party envisions doing this through its North East India ‘Sampark’ Cell (NEISC), New Delhi which was established only recently in the month of August this year. ‘Sampark’ stands for ‘communication’. The cell is envisioned to facilitate the over all well being of the people of the region, travelling to or staying in other parts of the country.
National convenor of the NEISC Sunil Deodhar on a visit here in Nagaland said Tuesday that the BJP through the cell will work for national integration.
He surmised that the people of the region have been compelled to seek education, career, jobs and medical amenities in the mainland because of the sorry state of infrastructure and lack of development here, and that in the midst of rampant corruptions in the ruling UPA alliance and the regional Congress governments.
With little or no awareness of the north east and its peoples in the major portion of the country, Deodhar said that when people from here land in the mainland, they are confronted by negative preconceived notions. This he attributed to the ruling Congress government at the centre not doing anything towards this end.
The BJP launched the cell with the aim to strengthen the “emotional integration” of the rest of the country with the north east, Deodhar asserted.
The NEISC convenor said that the cell intends to provide assistance to the people of the north-east spread all across the country in the form of counselling and first-hand help during admissions into educational institutions, getting a job and other related information.
It will sensitise various people and communities through conduct of programmes displaying the rich cultures and traditions of the region in the mainland, Deodhar said, besides promoting tourism. Deodhar added that a health helpline will be set in Delhi for the north-east through the NEISC.
The state’s BJP unit will also be electing a state convenor of the NEISC soon, the party’s state president M Chuba Ao said. Ao averred that the cell will enable the party and its workers to communicate with the rest of the country without much trouble when situation demands.
