BJP to bring NE vision document

6:47 AM
http://news.oneindia.in/img/2010/09/29-nitin-gadkari-new.jpgNew Delhi, Sep 29: BJP President Nitin Gadkari who is at Nagaon in Assam said that his party will bring its own vision document for North-east 2025.

After talking to media persons from North-east in Delhi, he said he understood the fast need for development in the region. The national president also shared his visions and plans and traced the root causes of under development and poverty.

Steadfast in his attack on the Congress party, he accused the ruling party of indulging in vote-bank politics.

“There is an overwhelming mood prevailing in Assam against the ruling Congress party, he said, citing reports from the State.

“People of Assam want to get rid of the Congress Government because of its failure to develop the State, provide employment and rampant corruption,” he concluded.

“The CBI is probing a few cases in Assam but then it has become Congress bureau of investigation,” he remarked.

Regarding the relationship between BJP and AGP he was cautious and stated, “When I went to Assam I appealed to AGP to fight the Assembly elections together with us. But if they don’t want to come, we will fight the elections on our own strength,” he said.

BJP fumes over azaan at CWG

Rajnath cites secular India to decry azaan in Games score; Says, chant Ved mantras
BJP fumes over azaan at CWG
The government's decision to make azaan, the Muslim prayer call, as part of the background score at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games, has irked the BJP. Senior party leader Rajnath Singh on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying India being a "secular nation" should not introduce "religious practices" in the sporting event.

Singh said the "most befitting thing" to represent India's cultural heritage and diversity in the opening and closing ceremonies would have been the "chanting of vedic mantras". It is surprising the government has decided to depict the religious aspect of Indian culture without mentioning the vedic culture, the most ancient and the basic root of most of India's religious sects, he said.

Singh's remarks -- seen as an overt display of the Hindutva card -- comes at a time when the BJP is rather circumspect about the fallout of the much awaited court verdict on the Ayodhya dispute.
The BJP leader asserted that "religion and religious practises should be left as the private domain of the players". Introducing religious practices in the Commonwealth Games would not only be uncalled for but will be a departure from the secular traditions of the Games, he added.

Singh was also unimpressed with the decision of the Group of Ministers to include props of Eid celebrations, qawwali soundtrack and other religious representations at the ceremonies. "I think the government has gone overboard with political angle even in the Games. He said Eid does not fall during the Games and said that "if any religious calender is to be kept in mind, then it should be the Navaratras."
Singh said the government should instead include the national anthem, and national song Vande Mataram at the ceremonies and urged the Prime Minister to intervene.

AGP parts ways with BJP

9:09 PM
Guwahati, Sep 21 : The AGP formally put an end to its year-long honeymoon with the BJP today.

The regional party took the decision to snap ties with the BJP at its general council meeting held here today.

AGP vice-president Apurba Bhattacharjee said the general council of the party had decided not to go with the BJP in next year’s Assembly elections in the state.

The AGP had pre-poll understanding with the BJP in the parliamentary elections last year. Though the AGP fared poorly, the BJP managed to up its tally at the expense of the regional party.

Bhattacharjee said the AGP would try to forge tie-ups with other regional parties to prevent the Congress from coming to power in 2011.

He said the six-member election committee of the party headed by its president Chandra Mohan Patowary would chalk out a strategy in this regard.

The AGP also hinted that the Rs 1,000-crore scam in Dima Hasao (formerly NC Hills) district would be its major poll plank in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Addressing the general council meeting, Patowary said because of rampant corruption and misrule by the Congress-led coalition government of the state, the people desperately wanted a change in government.

“The manner in which government funds were siphoned off in Dima Hasao district and the seizure of around Rs 13 crore in cash stacked in sacks and boxes from the house of a relative of a scam-accused government official by the CBI have raised the eyebrows of the people in the state.”

“Not only in Dima Hasao district, public money is being plundered in every government department in the state,” Patowary claimed.

Asserting that the people of Assam wish for a political change, Patowary egged on party workers to work at the grassroots to strengthen the AGP’s organisational base to help the regional party return to power next year.

The AGP chief said the Congress-led government in the state had remained a mute spectator to encroachment of the state’s land by neighbouring states like Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

“The present government has failed on all fronts. Things have gone from bad to worse be it price rise, unemployment, flood or erosion problem,” he said.

Patowary also criticised the government for not being able to halt the construction of the mega dam by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

He said the project would affect ecology, aquatic life and people in the downstream areas.

Sonia dials Mehbooba as Omar sulks

12:39 AM
New Delhi: On the eve of an all-party meeting on Jammu and Kashmir called by the Centre before it takes any key decision regarding the state, the two coalition partners there, the Congress and National Conference, today sent out mixed signals.
Sonia dials Mehbooba as Omar sulks
A day after the Centre said there was “trust deficit and governance deficit” in J and K and asked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to “deliver”, Congress president Sonia Gandhi reached out to former ally PDP, a bitter rival of the National Conference.
A day after the Centre said there was "trust deficit and governance deficit" in J&K and asked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to "deliver", Congress president Sonia Gandhi reached out to former ally PDP, a bitter rival of the National Conference.
From Srinagar, the NC too sent a signal to Delhi, saying the party would not repeat the mistake of 2000 when it decided to continue its alliance with the NDA despite the rejection of its autonomy proposal by the then BJP-led government at the Centre.
PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed also landed in New Delhi on the eve of the all-party meeting though his daughter and party president Mehbooba Mufti maintained that he was in town for a health check-up.
For the first time since the Omar government took charge in the Valley, Sonia Gandhi called up Mufti Sayeed and Mehbooba on Eid day.

Mehbooba Mufti refused to discuss the phone call, saying it was a “personal call”.
Mehbooba refused to discuss the phone call, saying it was a "personal call". She told The Indian Express that her party did not endorse the NC demand for amendments in the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act or its partial withdrawal from J&K.
"It is unfortunate that people either take the extreme position -- that nothing can be done in Kashmir because of the demand for azaadi and, therefore, the military situation -- or they just make it simplistic. When the situation in Kashmir started developing, Omar said it was political and blamed the
PDP for it. Today, he is again simplifying it. The issue of revocation of AFSPA is important, but the NC is simplifying the issue by demanding cosmetic changes like withdrawal of the AFSPA. He is looking for a face-saver. They think withdrawing it from some areas will give this government a few more days. We need to have a holistic, inclusive approach," Mehbooba said on phone from Srinagar.

Mehbooba termed the meeting called by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal "very important", and said that though all flights to Delhi had been suspended, her party was trying to send somebody to attend it.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal had called her to request PDP participation in the all-party meeting. Calling the meeting "very important", Mehbooba said that though all flights to Delhi had been suspended, her party was trying to send somebody to attend it.
Meanwhile, National Conference leader and Rajya Sabha MP G N Ratanpuri sought to blame the Centre for the unrest in Kashmir. "When Rahul Gandhi came to Kashmir, he said he was there because Omar was his friend. The perception is that Rahul's influence was phenomenal in his selection as Chief Minister. NC workers, however, perceive that he (Omar) has not been supported sincerely. People think the Government of India has taken us for granted. Some say Omar has Delhi's support, while his detractors say he is Delhi's man. For any Chief Minister, it is a minus point to be perceived as Delhi's man," Ratanpuri said.

In Srinagar, the NC core group, comprising six leaders besides Omar and party president Farooq Abdullah, took stock of all that had transpired between the state government and Delhi.

"The party will not remain silent this time. We will not repeat the mistake of 2000," NC leader Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan told The Indian Express. "We think the Government of India has not yet taken a final call on the the AFSPA issue. That is why they have called an all-party meet. Had it been a closed chapter, then the meeting tomorrow would not have been called. Our party has taken a position after serious deliberations and we are firm on our demand."

When contacted, Omar Abdullah said the party's delegation to the all-party meet - he would not be attending it - would not only put forth its demands on the AFSPA issue but also the "overall political direction that is needed".
Contacted by The Indian Express, Omar Abdullah said the party's delegation to the all-party meet - he would not be attending it - would not only put forth its demands on the AFSPA issue but also the "overall political direction that is needed". Asked whether the demand for restoration of autonomy would be raised, he said, "Obviously. Autonomy will be there because that is what we talk about."
What if the Centre were not to agree to the NC demand? "We will not answer if, but, how or what about our future course of action. Doctor Sahib (his father Farooq) and our other leaders will return, we will discuss the outcome of the all-party meeting and take a stand accordingly."

In New Delhi, the Central government said it "knows what it has to do" and was looking for that one "elusive starting point" where it could begin the dialogue process in Kashmir.
In New Delhi, the Central government said it "knows what it has to do" and was looking for that one "elusive starting point" where it could begin the dialogue process in Kashmir. Sources indicated that the government wanted to develop a political consensus before taking a final call on the proposals on the table.
The Centre's proposals range from amendments to the AFSPA to a new policy facilitating the return of ex-militants from PoK to the setting up of a Minorities Commission in the state to deal with issues relating to Sikhs and Hindus.
The CCS, sources said, may hold another meeting tomorrow in case some kind of a broad political consensus is reached at the all-party meeting. In case a decision is taken to send an all-party delegation to the state, the CCS meeting could be scheduled for a later date.

Bangladeshi influx issue to be BJP''s main poll plank in Assam

10:55 PM
Guwahati, Sept 9 (PTI) BJP will make the vexed Bangladeshi influx issue its principal poll plank in the next year's assembly polls in Assam, party General Secretary Varun Gandhi said here today.

But it would be 'unfair' to call the party communal for raising the influx issue, he told a party rally here.

He said a selective approach would be adopted and views of party workers at the grassroots would be taken before giving party tickets for polls, Gandhi, who is also BJP's election observer for Assam said.

Gandhi also asked his party workers to work in the greater interest of the public irrespective of any political interest. In the morning he visited the famous Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal hill here.
